Tom Hits Scottish Waves - 18/08/2010

Newquay’s British surf champion, Tom Butler, has braved the most challenging wave in Fargo, northern Scotland.

Last month, Quiver Surf Boards, (Toms Sponsor’s) supported Tom and his team’s trip to Scotland in the hope that he would crack a particular coast line that is famous amongst the surfing community, in particular in northern Scotland for producing perfect, big, heavy, powerful and intense waves. Due to Tom’s popularity and status in the surfing world, Quiver organised a ‘big wave photo shoot which will be released in this month’s Carve magazine’.

The team of three, which included Newquay born Mitch Corbett, the first person ever to surf this particular wave accompanied Tom to Scotland. In December last year Mitch was in Treliske Hospital in Truro on a life support machine for 5 days due to a severe head injury. Being lucky to be alive, let alone being able to surf again, Mitch ripped up the waves like the best of them.

Tom said, “The trip to Scotland was special for both Mitch and myself, for both of us to be surfing these crazy, scary waves together, shows his strong personality, desire and dedication to get back to where he was before the accident”.

Having had trouble with their jet ski, Tom not one for missing an opportunity decided to paddle the wave and from the left hand side, became the first person to ever accomplish this daring feat. Tom continues; “We have some of the best big wave spot's in the world here in the Great British Isles; I get the most excited when the sea conditions are big and challenging. I’m going to be pushing myself in the bigger stuff a lot this year and can’t wait for the first big swell's to start hitting our coasts. I’ll be setting off on a fair few surf trips over the course of 2010 taking a jet ski (sponsored by Cornwall entertainment) with the intentions of finding the biggest barrels out there to ride”.

Tom has recently launched his own company TB Surfing which allows fans to follow his progress by providing various links to social media platforms such as Twitter, YouTube and FaceBook.  The new easy to use website will list all of Tom’s events via an online calendar and will offer unique coaching packages by the surfing champion himself.

Tom’s website was built and supported by the Joe Way Appeal team in recognition for Tom’s dedicated support of which he is now an ambassador of. Tom will be supporting the Paddle for Life event in September this year.

Alan Stokes Crowned 2010 Sri Lanka Champion - 06/07/2010

QUIVER TEAM RIDER ALAN STOKES CROWNED THE WINNER AT THE 2010 SRI LANKA CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS

The weeks Sri Lanka Champion of Champions Surf Contest saw two new champions, some great weather and perfect conditions. UK Pro Surf Tour Champion Alan Stokes from Newquay and Welsh Champion Beth Mason showed stunning form in 3 to 4 ft conditions to take the top spots on the podium at one of the year’s most prestigious contests.  Organised by the UK Pro Surf Association (UKPSA), the event saw one of the largest ever entries with over 50 contestants travelling from all over the world to bid for this major title at Arugam Bay, Sri Lanka..

This years Champion Alan Stokes, commented, “I am ecstatic to have won this event, after coming 2nd last year and in previous years, it feels likes it has been a long time coming. It has been really nice to have an event with great waves and a really cool atmosphere.  Reubin and I came here three weeks before the event and we both finished in 1st and 2nd so it feels like the training has paid off.”

The swell decreased over the week, offering up some challenging surf for competitors to test their skills and demonstrate to the judges what they can do in the clean conditions.  The variety of moves and action on display was described by Head Judge Esther Spears as, “Definitely impressive – the best seen in many years. This shows a promising time for British surfing.”

The highest scoring wave of the day was from last years champion Alan Stokes, from Newquay. Who got a 9.50 point wave in the semi’s which then lead him into the man on man final against Reubin Pearce.  Alan went onto to win this years Open, 2nd place going to Reubin Pearce (South Africa), 3rd to nineteen year old Stuart Campbell (Woolocombe) and 4th to Reubyn Ash (Bude).

The all Welsh Women on Women final, was a fight to the end. With Beth Mason winning the Sri Lankan Champion of Champions Women’s division by  only a 0.77 lead, leaving Gwen Spurlock to pick up a very close 2nd place.  The local division also saw some great surfing and all the equipment that was used for the competition was kindly donated to them by the sponsors. Throughout the contest training had been given to the locals in judging and other aspects of contest management, and they hope this gift will allow them to run their own contests raising what is already a high standard of surfing in the area.

Green Foam ® arrives in Europe..... - 02/06/2010

Seabase has announced it is to distribute Green Foam® in Europe beginning this summer!

Green Foam blanks are made with a patented process using recycled foam and foam waste. US Blanks has reached an agreement to manufacture Green Foam® blanks using their large range of surfboard moulds and their expertise in foam blowing to further enhance their own green credentials – they are already producing surfboard blanks with some of the lowest emissions in the world from their EPA approved factory in California.

Green Foam blanks will be available from Seabase outlets in France, Portugal and the UK in the most popular blank sizes at a slight price premium over regular foam. Green Foam has a density around that of the current blue density US Blanks foam. “Using Green Foam blanks with our new ISO 10NP resin, the far safer and solvent free Resin Research epoxies, and our water based finish coatings will produce more sustainable surfboards and help placate our own in-house manufacturing concerns with the environmental impact surfboard production causes” says Seabase European Manager Pani Bundy.

“We’re excited to be part of this major change in surfboard manufacturing”.

Tom said “I have always been really competitive and determined, before I started surfing in competition I took part in surf life saving and played football, both at a high national level. I love to compete with my friends and brothers, and am always going toe to toe with them all.”

The website and branding has been a partnership between Tom and the Joe Way Paddle for life team. The Joe Way story has inspired many people to help with fundraising including other successful surfers such as Ben Skinner (Skindog) and Alan Stokes.

Matt Way, Joe’s Dad Said; ‘This was a great opportunity to give something back to Tom and support one of Newquay’s surfers to develop within the sport he loves. This will also give Joe’s paddle a lot of coverage at all of the surfing competitions and help to boost the popularity of this, now annual event”

Tom continues “My main aims and goals I am setting myself for 2010. Firstly to improve my UK Pro Surf Tour ranking finishing 2nd last year I only have one way to go being crowned the champ at the end of this season. Secondly we have some of the best big wave spot's in the world here in the Great British Isles; I get most excited in the sea when conditions are big and challenging.

The original Paddle for Life started after lifeguards from Fistral Beach held a Joe Way memorial paddle to raise money for the charity in 2008. For more information about the paddle or to enter ‘Joe’s Raffle’ and win exciting prizes that the surfers themselves have donated please visit the paddle website.www.joeway.co.uk

About C4 Waterman written by Dave Parmenter, C4 Board Designer/Shaper and Team Rider:
Welcome to the exciting and fast-growing new sport of Stand-Up Paddle Surfing.

A lot has happened in this emerging sport over the past year, and whether you are interested in high-performance surfing, racing across the Molokai Channel, or just cruising along the coast or your local lake, you'll probably want to learn as much as you can about all the different types of SUP paddle craft available on the market.

As the designer and shaper of the C4 Waterman Stand-Up Paddle surfboard line, I'd like to brief you on some of the features of the boards we offer.

One of the most common questions I am asked is, "What makes the C4 boards different from the all other SUP boards out there?"

Well, first and foremost, it would have to be the people behind the boards. Between Brian Keaulana, Todd Bradley, Mike Fox and myself, we bring over 160 years experience in surfing, canoe paddling, paddleboard racing, sailing, sea-kayaking and water safety disciplines to our SUP surfboard designs. Sure, there's been a lot of arguing about rocker and templates and fin arrays, but in the end it sure has helped the design evolution zip along.

Over the past decade I've been fortunate to have worked closely with one of the surfing world's preeminent watermen, Makaha's Brian Keaulana. Makaha, on Oahu's leeward coast, is the big board capital of the surfing universe, and the surfers there really demand a lot from their tandem boards and tankers. Brian was the originator of the modern high-performance SUP short board, and innovated most of the surfing techniques you see spreading around the globe right now.

Along with Brian, I've also spent a lot of time with Todd Bradley learning about canoe and racing hull design. A veteran outrigger canoe racer, Todd has crossed the Molokai Channel more times than I've had hot lunches. Five years ago, when we began designing our first SUP paddleboards, he envisioned a whole new class of racing-------a regatta-style division consisting of super-light, very fast paddle craft that would skate 'downhill' like flying fish. It wasn't long before we were hip-deep in EPS and hotwires and carbon fiber, experimenting with all sorts of hull designs. Sure, there were a few duds in the mix, but with Todd behind us (well, out in front of us, actually--------he smokes the rest of us in the races) it wasn't long before we came up with a 14-footer that really started shaving some minutes off our Hawaii Kai runs.

The chief feature I've tried to infuse into all the C4 Waterman boards is something pilots call 'control harmony'--------when a maneuver feels seamless and crisp in a perfectly coordinated response of ailerons, elevators and rudder. Like aircraft, surfboards move and turn on three axes, and both pilots and surfers love it when their craft answers the helm sweetly.

Without the proper and carefully balanced combination of rocker, outline, vee, and flats and edges, a Stand-Up surfboard is little more than an unwieldy tub. And the added leverage and torque provided by the paddle brings a whole new set of considerations.

The fleet of C4 Waterman SUP surf and paddle boards are designed, shaped, and ridden by a bunch of guys who paddle and surf them every day. Over the past 5 years we've paddled thousands of miles on our SUP surf craft---------in the surf, across the open ocean, on lakes and down rivers. We've tested and refined our boards in Hawaii, Australia, the Maldives, Europe, Japan, Tahiti, and all across the continental United States.

So let's check out what we've come up with and see which boards best suit your needs and local conditions.

Candice wins English National Longboarding 2010 - 04/05/2010

Candice wins 2010 English National's, Womens Longboarding

Candice O'Donnell stamped her mark yet again at this year's English National's held at Watergate bay 2010.

The surf was in the 2ft range and onshore but quite contestable.  Candice was a standout in every heat of competition, surfing in a 6-women final, she comfortably took out her second English Longboarding title riding a Quiver Longboard (made by Mark Neville at Seabase www.seabase.eu).

"Conditions were tough, surfing a 6 women final in poor conditions, strong winds and shifting peaks, but I managed to keep focused on getting two good waves as soon as the heat started.  I am extremely happy with this win, and will take this positive energy forward to my next event on the BLU tour in a weeks time, thanks to all my sponsors for their support!"  Roxy / Vans / Seabase / Quiver / Errant Surf

Quiver teams heads to Scotland - 03/10/2009

The Quiver team headed to Scotland late last month for a week of pumping surf with the UK's top riders - all surfing for Quiver Surfboards - Seabase's own in house brand of surfboard shaped by Luke Hart, Mark Neville, and Phil Hodge.

Quiver Team bails for Scotland. - 24/09/2009

Quiver® Crew get classic Scottish Surf!

The Quiver® crew tossed a coin and rather than going to the British Nationals headed for Scotland for some of the most epic surf ever photographed in the UK. Good decision as it turned out.

The trip, sponsored by Seabase and assisted by Mercedes-Benz UK, was a spontanious decision to prove how great and how unbustable their new Quiver surfboards could be. Seabase shaper Luke Hart, the darling of UK surfing right now, (shaper for five of the top ten surfers in the UK - plus two famous seniors) arranged for the team of surfers, photos and journalists to drive all day to get classic Scotland waves. As it happened, World Champion French rider Antoine Delpero's younger brother was there, getting perfect surf but he watched in horror as his favourite shortboard floated out to sea! We've heard about this young surfer - he's hot and a future competitor for his brother's crown.

With three photographers for upcoming coverage in Pit Pilot, Wavelength and  Carve, the group of the UK's best riders, including Tom Butler, Adam Griffiths, Mitch Corbett, and Josh Hughes drove non-stop to get classic waves at Thurso in some of the best conditions ever.

A movie producer there filmed Adam Griffiths getting a ten-second tube ride he considers one of absolute high points of his career. Its featured as the sign-off for his new surf film, out soon. Watch for it.

The Quiver® boards survived some of the most extreme conditions at "The Slab", with even Adam Griffiths declaring his Quiver® carbon railed longboard absoutely unbreakable after survivng some of the most intense tubes experienced in the UK.  "The board was unreal - the perfect board for the conditions. I'm sold on the Quiver Seaflex design - my board is so fast, with feel and immense strength. It doesn't chatter as a lot of longer Epoxy boards do, it doesn't feel stiff, its got so much sensitivity and speed, and yet its so light. I can't break it, and I'm an expert!"  Adam's shaper Mark Neville designed the new Quiver® Pro boards to perform in all conditions, while Sam Jenkins and others in the factory team design the laminates that give Quiver their lighness and strength.

Tom Butler also raved about his new Quiver® boards, as did all the team. Tomm survived every effort to crush him and his equipment. Shaper Luke Hart says "stoked how the boys and the boards performed. This was a proving trip for what we can achieve when you have a good relationship with your shaper and great surfboards".  Luke is particular about watching surfers before he designs their boards, and is one of Europe's in-demand shortboard shapers right now. Considering even team surfers pay for their Quiver® surfboards, Luke has a waiting list of surfers young and old queueing for his Quiver® designs, while demand is huge for the carbon railed Quiver Ultimates at £600 each.  In a world first, Phil Hodges has perfected the machining of the Quiver Parabolic blanks, enabling shapers to refine production and designs.  Mark Neville's Quiver® longboards, especially the Pro version, continue to attract the UK's best riders.

More details soon - pix to follow. Thanks to Luke for his work in getting this whole deal underway. Our thanks to Mercedes-Benz for their added sponsorship - trips like this are all too infrequent and more will happen.

UK surfing is on a real roll, and I'd say if predjudices are left out, we'll be showing the world how progressive surfing in the UK is now totally world-class!

Bob McTavish Surfs Quiver! - 28/08/2009

(Picture kind courtesy of www.robtibbles.com. Great site! Thanks Rob - the lunatic is truly in control.)

As a kid growing up in the surf in New Zealand I admired and worshipped five surfers - Phil Edwards, Dewey Webber, Nat Young, Midget Farrelly and Bob McTavish. One of the most creative all time surfers, and still hugely respected world-wide for his innovation, creativity (especially with George Greenough - watch "Crystal Voyager" before you die!) and his genial, modest nature, Bob McTavish is one of surfing's greatest and one of the sports finest characters.

So it was with pride approaching disbelief when I heard the story of Bob's recent visit to Devon. The story goes - and I'm more than willing to believe it - that Bob was surfing one of his own boards in very average and typical North Devon surf. He borrowed one of our sponsored riders Quiver longboards and didn't give it back! Surfed it all evening apparently, then eulogised later about the board. All or none of this may be true - we only have the picture...

Now I'm willling to be content with seeing you on our Quiver board, Bob, its a great honour and after all we strongly believe its one of the best longboard designs in the world right now, especially the Mark Neville Seaflex models.
Sincerely though, if there is any way we can help you in the future with a more permanant arrangement, please call. You could shape some for us - or perhaps ride our other shapes?

Did I say thank you?  Thank you!

Tom Butler Signs for Quiver! - 21/08/2009

Top UK Junior British Champion Tom Butler collecting his third Quiver surfboard from Seabase!

Tom, one of the UK's best ever shortboard surfers (and one of the nicest) 4 times British & UK Junior Champion, had been raving about his test board, claiming it "by far the best board I've ever had!"

Tom collected his new boards from Seabase this week, saying he was so stoked with his progress since riding Quivers. He claims Luke Hart's designs and the Light, Quick and tough Quivers have advanced his surfing another big notch. The only problem he has is having to pay for them - something he says he'll have to get used to!

Seabase are priveleged to have Tom join our surf team of young, progressive surfers.

Creatures Sponsored rider Clay Marzo wins again - 18/08/2009

Clay Marzo Marches to Victory at Quiksilver Pro Puerto Escondido

PUERTO ESCONDIDO, Mexico (Tuesday, August 18, 2009) – Clay Marzo (Maui, HI), 19, claimed the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) 3-Star Quiksilver Pro Puerto Escondido in impressive fashion today when he put fellow finalists Junior Faria (BRA), 22, Angelo Lozano (Puerto Escondido, MEX), 22, and Cory Arrambide (Ventura, CA), 19, in a combination situation to take out his first ASP WQS victory.

Although the finalists faced inconsistent conditions at Puerto Escondido, Marzo managed to capitalize on the two best waves and displayed a mind-blowing combination of barrel-riding, progressive tail-drifting turns and reverses to take out the victory.

“I was a little worried because it was a little mixed up out there,” Marzo said. “I got that first score and was able to relax enough to get the other one.”

The talented goofy-footer posted an opening score of a solid 8.25 before closing the doors on his competitors when he logged a massive 9.25 (both out of a possible 10) for a committing reverse.

“I saw this section coming and knew I needed to do something big,” Marzo said. “I did a little tack and luckily I did a big throw-tail and came out fins first and was able to spin it around.”

Quiksilver Pro Puerto Escondido Final:
1- Clay Marzo (HAW) 17.50
2- Junior Faria (BRA) 11.50
3- Angelo Lozano (MEX) 8.20
4- Cory Arrambide (USA) 6.20
